Kojamo aims to use carbon-neutral energy in its properties by 2030

On 2 December 2020, Kojamo launched its sustainability program, which is based on Kojamo’s strategy and vision of creating better urban housing. With its sustainability program, Kojamo commits to complying with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and aims to use carbon-neutral energy in its properties by 2030. As part of the company’s goal of becoming carbon-neutral, Kojamo has joined the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment of the World Green Building Council.

Aiming for carbon-neutral energy use is an ambitious goal that guides the company's responsibility work. Kojamo wants to take action to restrain climate change by improving the energy consumption of its property portfolio and reducing its carbon footprint.

In practice, the goal of using carbon-neutral energy by 2030 is accomplished by improving energy efficiency and increasing the production of renewable energy and the volume of delivered energy produced with renewable energy sources. In addition, Kojamo has already committed to the voluntary energy efficiency agreement of the real estate sector (VAETS) until 2025, which also supports accomplishing the goal. The property electricity of all Kojamo properties has been emission-free and produced with renewable energy sources since the beginning of 2019.

The sustainability program brings together the company’s long-term sustainability efforts as practical goals and measures. Corporate responsibility and sustainable development are the key areas of Kojamo’s strategy and in the company’s DNA. Kojamo’s Bord of Directors has approved the responsibility program on 4th of November, 2020.

Key impacts and goals specified in the sustainability program

The responsibility program consists of four responsibility themes focused on the key impacts of operations, the most important goals and the expectations of stakeholders. In addition to the company’s long-term responsibility efforts, the program is based on a materiality analysis on responsibility conducted in early 2020. The materiality analysis was conducted to ensure that the responsibility program focuses on the most important themes of responsibility in terms of the company’s strategy, business operations and stakeholders.

The key themes of the Kojamo sustainability program are

  • sustainable cities
  • delivering the best customer experience
  • the most competent personnel and a dynamic place to work
  • a responsible corporate citizen

The extensive sustainability program specifies the goals of, for example, carbon-neutral energy consumption, energy efficiency, recycling, creating first-class employee experiences, the well-being of personnel, customers’ net promoter score, services that make sustainable housing possible and the responsibility of procurement projects. The supporting pillars of the program are securing long-term profitability and growth, sustainable and responsible operations and transparent responsibility communications and reporting.

  • “We are now launching a sustainability program that specifies our goals for 2021–2030. The program is part of our business operations and we will continue to monitor the progress of our sustainability efforts on an annual basis,” says Hannamari Koivula, Manager, Corporate Responsibility and Sustainability.
