KONE to equip triple-tower student accommodation complex in London Docklands
KONE Corporation, press release, March 26, 2024
KONE Corporation, a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry, has won an order to provide a suite of people flow solutions for 2 Trafalgar Way in Tower Hamlets. The development is part of a mixed-use student accommodation complex on the edge of the Canary Wharf business district in London Docklands.
This new community-centric space is poised to become the largest Passivhaus in Europe, providing superior occupant comfort with minimal energy consumption for heating and cooling. The building complex will consist of three towers rising to 28, 36 and 48 stories, transforming a long-vacant plot into a vibrant neighborhood with sky gardens, planted terraces and green roofs.
“We’re proud to contribute to a project that prioritizes both environmental responsibility and resident well-being,” says Nicolas Alchal, Executive Vice President of KONE Europe. “Our commitment to improving occupant comfort aligns perfectly with the student-led accommodation’s vision, creating a vibrant academic hub in the newly landscaped Tower Hamlets area.”
2 Trafalgar Way is set to include commercial office and retail space, indoor children’s play space, and a drive-through restaurant. There will be 1,672 student beds and 80 residential apartments, catering specifically to the needs of University College London (UCL).
KONE was involved in the design process for 2 Trafalgar Way early on and will install seven JumpLift 200 elevators for enhanced construction efficiency. The order also comprises six accessibility platforms, five construction time use (CTU) elevators, five KONE MiniSpace™ elevators, eight KONE MonoSpace® 700 elevators, and two KONE MonoSpace® 500 elevators. All the elevators will have KONE’s destination control system (DCS).
The elevator experience in the student-led accommodation will be enhanced by the KONE Elevator Call, allowing passengers to call the elevator with their smart phone.
2 Trafalgar Way is expected to open for the 2026/27 academic year. The developer is Urbanest UK Limited, and the main contractor is Midgard Limited. The architectural design was done by Apt.
KONE booked the order in Q3 of 2023.
