Konecranes hybrid RTGs to South Carolina Ports Authority
Konecranes has won an order from South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) for three Konecranes RTGs equipped with hybrid power packs. This is the second order for Konecranes hybrid RTGs. The cranes will be delivered in Q1 2020 to the Wando Welch Terminal, Charleston, South Carolina, USA.
The new Konecranes hybrid RTGs will help the SCPA to continue growing. In January the SCPA announced that 2018 was the strongest year in its history with six percent container volume growth. The SPCA owns and operates public marine terminals in the Port of Charleston and the Port of Georgetown, in addition to inland ports in Greer and Dillon, South Carolina.
The new RTGs will be hybrid, for eco-efficient operation without compromising crane performance. The hybrid system will have a lithium-ion battery pack and advanced battery management system that will monitor the charge level and the general health of the batteries. Konecranes will be able to monitor the status of this system via TRUCONNECT® remote connection. The hybrid system, fully modular and retrofittable, comes with an eco-efficient Tier 4f engine that will charge the batteries when necessary.
“These hybrid RTGs mark a new era in SCPA’s pursuit of eco-efficiency,” said Jussi Suhonen, Sales Director Americas, Konecranes Port Solutions. “At Konecranes we are constantly pushing battery technology and electrification forward to make our container handling equipment more eco-efficient without compromising crane performance in any way,” he continued.
The RTGs will have a lifting capacity of 50 tons while stacking containers 1-over-5 high and 6 plus truck lane wide. They will be equipped with the Active Load Control system, which eliminates container sway. They will also be equipped with the advanced features Auto-steering and Truck Lift Prevention.
