Konecranes is supporting Metsä Group’s tissue paper mill expansion and modernization in Mariestad with seven overhead cranes. The order was booked in April 2024, with delivery to take place in two stages: The first batch of cranes is currently being installed, and the second is scheduled for delivery and installation in the second half of 2024.

The expansion will focus purely on sustainable fresh fibre production, after which the total fresh fibre share at the mill will be 80%. The mill produces high quality Lambi, Serla and Katrin tissue products for both consumer and professional use and when the expansion is ready, the current capacity will be doubled to approximately 145,000 t/a.

“Metsä’s decision to partner with Konecranes was driven by a need for reliable, high-performance equipment that aligns with our ambitious targets in operational efficiency. The advanced features of Konecranes’ solutions, such as smart automation capabilities, are important for our modernized production processes,” says Esa Paavolainen, VP Projects, Metsä Tissue.

"Our commitment to have the best solutions for our customers is deeply ingrained in our people and products. Environmental sustainability and product design are aligning perfectly with partners like Metsä Group, with whom we collaborated closely to deliver the tailored solution that best fits their processes and needs,” says Joakim Dahlbacka, Sales Engineer for Sweden, Norway & Denmark.

The project includes a diverse mix of cranes tailored for specific purposes. On the paper mill side, a 30-ton and a 20-ton CXT crane will handle maintenance tasks, while a 10-ton CXT crane is designated for the Mezzanine side. On the converting side, three semi-automated cranes will be integrated alongside another CXT crane with Konecranes' CANBUS technology. These cranes are equipped with advanced features such as inverters for smooth movements, precise target positioning and seamless communication with building systems. Integrated smart features such as Snag Prevention, Hook Centering, and Follow Me, enhance productivity and safety. Moreover, the scope of the order encompasses runway installations spanning up to 160 meters, alongside a service contract covering all cranes.

A strong focus on customers and commitment to business growth and continuous improvement make Konecranes a material handling industry leader. This is underpinned by investments in digitalization and technology, plus our work to make material flows more efficient with solutions that decarbonize the economy and advance circularity and safety.
