Konecranes to modernize cranes at two AXIA Energia hydropower plants in Brazil
Konecranes has won two crane modernization projects from AXIA Energia, one of Brazil's leading renewable energy and electricity transmission companies. The projects involve the modernization of overhead cranes and gantry cranes at the Manso and Mascarenhas de Moraes hydroelectric power plants in Brazil. The contracts were signed in May 2026, with deliveries scheduled for 2027.
The modernization projects will support AXIA Energia's broader program to upgrade its hydroelectric power generation facilities. The cranes and gantries are essential for the maintenance and modernization of the plants' turbines and will play an important role throughout the plant upgrade process.
The scope of supply includes the electrical and mechanical modernization of five cranes at the two power plants: two overhead cranes and three gantry cranes. The work includes the replacement of drives and drive motors, installation of new braking systems, implementation of variable frequency drives (VFDs), upgrades to the control and automation systems, installation of radio remote controls and modernization of operator cabins.
At the Mascarenhas de Moraes Hydroelectric Power Plant in Minas Gerais, Konecranes will modernize one gantry crane with a 200-ton main hoist and a 25-ton auxiliary hoist. The modernization is scheduled for February 2027.
At the Manso Hydroelectric Power Plant in Mato Grosso, Konecranes will modernize four cranes, including two overhead cranes with capacities of 65/15/5 tons and two gantry cranes with capacities of 20 tons and 15 tons. The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
"Hydropower plant modernizations place high demands on lifting equipment and its reliability. By upgrading the cranes' mechanical and control systems, we are preparing the equipment for intensive use during the turbine modernization projects and improving its safety, reliability and availability to support the plant upgrades," says Fellipi Pereira, Senior Account Executive, Konecranes.
