Arctic Wind chooses Kongsberg EmPower

Arctic Wind chooses Kongsberg Renewables Technology's newly developed wind farm management system, "Kongsberg EmPower", for monitoring and decision support on the company's wind farm at Havøygavlen. In addition, Kongsberg Renewables Technology will contribute to the development of new operational and maintenance routines at the wind farm.

Kongsberg EmPower is a newly developed turbine independent decision support system based on KONGSBERG's broad experience with automation and decision support systems for the defence and maritime sectors as well as offshore oil and gas. It has a functionality that surpasses all other systems for wind farm management and data collection on the market.

The system that is delivered to Arctic Wind will mainly focus on wind farm monitoring and condition monitoring. The agreement also includes an option for purchasing additional Kongsberg EmPower modules, such as Production Forecasting and Wind Farm Control.

The world’s most northerly wind farm
The system will be installed at Havøygavlen Wind Turbine Farm, located in the municipality of Måsøy between Hammerfest and the North Cape. Havøygavlen is the world's most northerly wind farm with extreme winds and a cold climate. The wind farm counts 16 wind turbines and has a total capacity of 40 MW. This gives an annual output of around 120 GWh. The wind farm has been in operation since 2003.

With status data supplied by Kongsberg EmPower it is easier for Arctic Wind to carry out maintenance of the wind farm based on the actual needs. Arctic Wind will work together with Kongsberg Renewables Technology to develop new routines and procedures, based on data from Kongsberg EmPower, and the aim is to reduce maintenance costs for the wind farm.

"With this new decision support system we expect to be able to predict our maintenance needs with higher precision and thereby be able to plan our activities more accurately. Operating wind turbines in Arctic conditions requires a high degree of predictability, as the climate restricts our scope of action in relation to when and how we carry out work on our turbines," says Egon Leonardsen, CEO at Arctic Wind AS

"We want to develop our wind energy operation model, and we see Kongsberg Renewables Technology as a good partner because of their experience with operation and maintenance management," says Leonardsen.

"We are very satisfied with the agreement with Arctic Wind. Arctic Wind is a customer with high standards of turbine production and with a clear ambition of reducing their operational and maintenance costs. Kongsberg EmPower will be an important tool for achieving these ambitions, and we look forward to starting up and working together with the world's most northerly wind farm," says Kristian Holm, General Manager of Kongsberg Renewables Technology.
