BioConstruct – Commissioning of first AD Plant in Ireland
AD plant in Roscommon designed for heat and electricity production from sewage sludge and other waste materials
A new AD plant with two 499 kW engines had been commissioned end of 2017 and produces heat and electricity from pressed sewage sludge and local waste streams. The AD plant was developed by the Irish company Biocore Environmental Ltd. BioCore’s founder and CEO Declan Murray stated:” We are happy that after a long period of project development, the plant is finally up and running and producing energy from waste streams”. The idea to develop the site for this project came up in 2008 Since then, a lot of work and effort has been done to finally reach a point where the construction works could start towards the end of 2016. One of the key challenges to get the project off the ground was to find a funder who had the right experience to evaluate and understand the project and technology. In the case of the Roscommon project, Biocore agreed terms with SQN Asset Finance Income Fund Limited, through its investment manager SQN Capital Management (UK) Limited. Ariel Vegoda, General Counsel and director of SQN Capital Management (UK), was excited by the project and the opportunity to work with Biocore and Bioconstruct at this particular site, and commented: ”Roscommon is a great site, with fantastic potential and we were delighted to have the opportunity to continue investing in the Irish AD market and to also support the expansion of both the Biocore and BioConstruct business.
The Irish biogas industry expects an introduction of new biomethane tariffs this autumn and the parties are confident, that more waste-to-energy projects can be expected.
