International experts discuss the role of Sustainable Chemistry in the pathway towards decarbonizing the chemical sector and other associated sectors.
With its regular SPOTLIGHT events, the International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISC3) highlights the relevance of Sustainable Chemistry for the most pressing global challenges. The upcoming event in the online event series will occur on Thursday, November 28, 2024. From 2 pm to 6:15 pm, 21 international experts from various fields will discuss innovative, climate-friendly solutions.
The speakers include, among others:
- Oliver Wootton, Senior Program Specialist, Chemicals & Waste Management Programme, UNITAR
- Adrian Geraldo Rodriguez, Chief, Agricultural Development Unit, ECLAC
- Prof. Dr. Klaus Kümmerer, Holder of the Federal Cross of Merit and Wöhler Prize winner for Sustainable Chemistry, Leuphana University Lüneburg and Director Research & Education Hub ISC3
SPOTLIGHTS: Bringing together global expertise and stakeholders
“With our SPOTLIGHTS, we are bringing together international stakeholders and global expertise on core topics of Sustainable Chemistry,” says Dr. Thomas Wanner, Managing Director of ISC3. “In this way, we raise awareness of the most pressing challenges of our time, foster exchange and create a common understanding of the urgency to act.”
Sustainable Chemistry as a driver of climate-friendly innovations
The overarching topic of the event at the end of November will be innovative approaches at the interface between Sustainable Chemistry and climate-friendly solutions as well as the decarbonization of the chemical sector. Speakers from politics, science, business, and youth organisations will provide valuable insights into future-oriented business models, research, and political framework conditions.
Programme:
- Keynote by Prof. Dr. Klaus Kümmerer: Prof. Kümmerer will open the event with a keynote on the role of Sustainable Chemistry in the development of circular, sustainable processes and products and its contribution to combating climate change.
- Panel discussion on the bioeconomy: Under the title “Unlocking the potential of the bioeconomy: Catalyzing regional growth in Colombia, Ecuador and Uruguay”, seven experts will discuss the development and implementation of bioeconomic strategies in Latin America.
- Webinar on data and sustainability: The second webinar deals with the question of how scientific data in the field of sustainable chemistry can be used to combat climate change and environmental pollution. Organisations such as the International Younger Chemistry Network (IYCN), the Community Action Against Plastic Waste (CAPws), and the Chemicals and Waste Youth Platform will discuss the potential solutions of Sustainable Chemistry together with the ISC3.
- Webinar on synergies between the Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC) and climate-friendly innovations: In the last programme item, international representatives from policy, research and start-ups will discuss the importance of the GFC and concrete, innovative approaches from the African start-up scene. Participating organisations include UNITAR, BMUV, UBA, and the African Climate Innovation Challenge.
