The Crafoord Prize in Mathematics 2012 and The Crafoord Prize in Astronomy 2012 will soon be announced
News this year are that the prize amount is doubled to totally SEK 8 million and that Video News Releases with experts from the prize committees, and newly recorded interviews with chosen Laureates are released with the press material.
On early Thursday morning on 19 January, at 01:00 am (Swedish time, CET) the Crafoord Prize for 2012 will be announced for international media. This year’s disciplines are mathematics and astronomy, divided into two separate prizes.
A press release and an illustrated popular science article will be published and scientific experts are available on telephone. Hopefully, Laureates will also be available for interviews. In that case these telephone numbers are handed out by the Press officer at the Academy, see below.
Prize amount: SEK 4 million per prize, i.e. totally SEK 8 million.

The Crafoord Prize
The Crafoord Prize is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences annually. The prize amount of 4 million Swedish kronor makes the Crafoord Prize one of the world´s largest scientific prizes.
Anna-Greta and Holger Crafoord´s Fund was established in 1980 and the first prize was awarded in 1982.
The prize is intended to promote international basic research in the disciplines
• Astronomy and Mathematics,
• Geosciences,
• Biosciences (with particular emphasis on ecology) and
• Polyarthritis (rheumatoid arthritis).
The prize in Polyarthritis is awarded only when scientific progress in this field has been such that an award is justified. The last time the Crafoord Prize was awarded in Polyarthritis was in 2009.
The disciplines are chosen so as to complement those for which the Nobel Prize® is awarded.
