Laerdal launches MamaNatalie simulator - Providing affordable training in maternal and newborn care

Report this content

As part of its growing portfolio of healthcare education products for obstetricians and midwives, Laerdal Medical Ltd (Laerdal) has launched MamaNatalie, a birthing simulator that provides realistic and affordable training in maternal and newborn care.

Improving communication skills

The MamaNatalie simulator, which gives birth to NeoNatalie, a highly realistic newborn simulator, is easily portable and can be made ready for use quickly. It can be manipulated by any qualified instructor after only a few minutes introduction. Good communication with the mother is essential to assess, interpret and prompt corrective treatment. Strapped to the instructor, MamaNatalie is unique in its ability to facilitate the development of communication skills. This makes it particularly suitable for ‘in situ’ simulation training scenarios. The user friendly realism of the simulator and engaging role play scenarios make learning sessions efficient and unforgettable, for both learners and facilitators.

Realistic training in control of postpartum haemorrhage

The instructor can manually control foetal heart sounds, the delivery of the placenta, baby positions in the birth tract, uterine firmness and the intensity of blood loss. This particular feature also enables MamaNatalie to provide realistic training in control of postpartum haemorrhage – the number one cause of maternal death during childbirth. The instructor can simulate bleeding and easily manipulate the condition of the uterus in response to the student’s actions

Buy One, Gift One

With Laerdal’s mission to help save lives through the advancement of quality education in healthcare, the company recently established Laerdal Global Health (www.laerdalglobalhealth.com), a not-for-profit affiliate, to support the UN Millennium Development Goals number 4 and 5 to reduce child mortality by two thirds and maternal mortality by three quarters from 1990 to 2015. Each year 350,000 mothers and nearly 2 million babies die during birth with 99% of these deaths occurring in developing countries where mothers have up to 500 times higher lifetime risk of dying when giving birth. Through Laerdal’s Buy One Gift One initiative (www.laerdal.com/binaries/AEYIGSGQ.pdf), for each MamaNatalie sold for use in a developed country, Laerdal Global Health will donate a second unit to a training programme in a developing country to try to reduce this inequity.
