Scottish aquaculture company Landcatch is in the running for a prestigious scientific award.

The company, based at Ormsary in Argyll, has been nominated with Edinburgh University’s Roslin Institute in the commercial collaboration section of the Scottish Enterprise Annual Life Sciences Awards.

The awards will be announced at a gala dinner to be held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre on Thursday, 6 February and will be attended by nearly 800 guests across the sector.

Landcatch and the Roslin Institute have been jointly nominated for work they have undertaken on developing and applying genetic markers for a QTL, or major gene, controlling resistance to the Infectious Pancreatic Necrosis virus (IPN) which is a significant problem to the global salmon industry.

In a long-term research collaboration, Landcatch and Roslin Institute studied populations of salmon challenged with the virus and located a region of chromosome controlling infection to IPN.  Genetic markers in this region found by the scientists at Landcatch and Roslin have been used to identify resistant fish to be used in breeding.

Landcatch was the first company to apply this technology commercially in aquaculture. It is now used routinely in Landcatch breeding programmes in Scotland and Chile.

The company has 27 staff at Ormsary and five at its genetics base in Stirling.
