FIVE DAYS TO GO…WORLD’S TOP SPORTS STARS WAIT FOR LAUREUS NOMINATIONS TO BE ANNOUNCED
BERLIN, February 26, 2016 – The Nominations for the 2016 Laureus World Sports Awards will be announced on March 2 - and some of the greatest names in sport are waiting to see if they will be on the shortlist, following a vote by the world’s media.
Six Nominees will be announced for each of the Sportsman, Sportswoman, Team, Breakthrough, Comeback, Disability and Action Sports categories.
Former winners Usain Bolt, Genzebe Dibaba, Novak Djokovic, Jessica Ennis-Hill, Lewis Hamilton, Lyndsey Vonn and Serena Williams have all had excellent years and will be hoping to be nominated again.
Football has some strong individual contenders in Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and US women’s star Carli Lloyd, who scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final.
FC Barcelona and the US Women’s Football Team will be hoping to be shortlisted for the Team Award, as will the All Blacks, the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team and Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One.
Stephen Curry and LeBron James both had an inspiring year in basketball, while boxer Floyd Mayweather, gymnasts Simone Biles and Kohei Uchimura, track and field’s Allyson Felix, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and David Rudisha and Tour de France winner Chris Froome are all possible Nominees.
