Framfab joins Bredbandsbolaget's (B2) bid for the for Swedish UMTS-license Framfab has agreed with Bredbandsbolaget to take a 15% stake in its consortium that will apply for one of the four Swedish UMTS licenses to be awarded in late November 2000. Bredbandsbolaget is currently discussing with a range of other international and Swedish strategic partners on their participation in the consortium. The combination of Framfab, Bredbandsbolaget and other strategic partners that we are discussing with, will provide an excellent foundation from which to realize the vision of offering seamless broadband services to the mass market. "Personally, I believe it to be a major step forward if we could be the first player in the world to offer mobile phone calls at a low flat rate. We have already demonstrated the ability to drive competition on the Swedish market for broadband services to the benefit of end-users. Through the establishment of this venture, we will not only bring real competition to the market for mobile services, but also, through strong innovation and advanced services, reinforce Sweden's leadership in terms of development of Internet and wireless services", says Jonas Birgersson, Framfabs CEO. UMTS (Universal Mobile Telephony System) is a new standard for broadband services and wireless communications, building on and radically extending the current GSM capabilities. While GSM was originally designed for voice services, UMTS has from the outset been specified with the mobile Internet and multimedia services in mind.
