Founder Lara Kettenacker, explains the concept. “When planning my own wedding, I noticed how many services I was booking that other brides would be using in my area around the date of my wedding. Take for example chair covers, which most couples hire for their wedding. I knew that if I could find someone getting married close to me, then we could either buy chair covers together and share them or strike a good deal with a local supplier for hiring for two days rather than one”.
By clubbing together, brides can share items, experiences and negotiate deals with suppliers. So far the biggest single saving has been £150 on booking a live band for two weddings, rather than one.
Through her own experience and enthusiasm for social networking, she found that the internet is a great source of research but it was difficult to find forum discussions specific to her county. “I didn’t want to sift through national forums to find snippets out about weddings in my county. I want to easily see people’s recommendations of suppliers that are close to me and have a way of finding other local brides to be to chat with. As a result, I was inspired to set up a website to fill the gap”.
Unitedbrides.com offers brides-to-be the opportunity to browse, chat and even post their own topics for discussion about their forthcoming wedding. Members from Dundee to Plymouth can choose to show their wedding on their county calendar to help other brides spot weddings close to their own. The local directory lists wedding suppliers specific to each county.
