Lindex and WaterAid launch project for women and water in Myanmar

Lindex and WaterAid launch a joint project in Myanmar, to increase the access to clean drinking water and sanitation as well as improved hygiene. The project aims to empower women and girls in communities where textile workers live, and is a continuation of Lindex’s and WaterAid’s ongoing and impactful collaboration in Bangladesh.

During the two-year project, clean drinking water facilities and proper toilets in communities and schools in Yangoon, Myanmar will be installed. Empowering and mobilising women and girls to spread knowledge and lead the change in their communities is an important part of the project. The project also aims to improve the water, sanitation and hygiene conditions for textile workers in factories, who are mostly women.

“Basic needs come first and without access to clean water and sanitation, women will not be able to fulfil their potential. We are very proud of the positive impact our collaboration with WaterAid has had so far and we look forward to continuing our work together in Myanmar”, says Anna-Karin Dahlberg, Corporate Sustainability Manager at Lindex.

Lindex’s collaboration with WaterAid is part of the fashion company’s sustainability promise – to make a difference for future generations – where both women and water are focus areas. Women are the ones who are most affected by lack of access to clean water and sanitation, as it often limits their opportunities to get an education and ability to fulfil their potential. Every day, millions of women walk for hours to get water, which means they have no time left to go to work, go to school or engage in their community.

“Traditionally many businesses limit their actions to ensure access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene in their own or in their first-line suppliers' factories. But without clean water and access to toilets at home and in schools, people will still get sick even if their workplace is clean. WaterAid's partnership with Lindex has previously changed the lives of thousands of textile workers in Bangladesh by improving their access to clean water and sanitation in garment factories, communities and schools, and we are very happy that we together with Lindex now will be able to continue and expand that approach in Myanmar. This project will have great impact on thousands of people, especially on women and girls, enabling them and their families to be healthy, live more productive lives and fulfil their potential", says Cecilia Chatterjee-Martinsen, Executive Director of WaterAid Sweden.
