Alpha Micro Wireless announces pilot plan for integrating the world’s smallest Iridium transceiver into a SMART utility meter modem configured for Satellite Based Access (SBA)

Jupiter, Florida – September 30, 2012 – At Autovation this year, Alpha Micro Wireless announced plans to bring to market an “under the glass” SMART Meter Satellite Based Access (SBA) solution which makes use of the world’s smallest two-way satellite data transceiver, the Iridium 9603. The solution is targeted at electricity utilities and SMART meter vendors that want to achieve 100% remote meter read rates by leveraging SBA in areas not covered by traditional terrestrial networks. (Nasdaq: IRDM), the only company to provide truly global satellite communications.

Alpha Micro also announces a new franchised distribution agreement with Maxtena Inc., the wireless innovations company and the creator of the Iridium-certified, high performance Helicore™ antenna.

Commenting on these new developments, Norm Smith, President and CEO of Alpha Micro Wireless, said, “Today, utility companies are increasingly sensitive to large scale wireless enabled SMART meter deployments that fail to deliver 100% read rates. In order to help utility companies reach that goal, Alpha Micro Wireless is delivering innovative high performance RF technology, supported by Iridium®, to provide a global solution that specifically addresses this need.”

“I am delighted that Iridium and Maxtena have recognized  Alpha Micro’s ability to develop and pilot an ‘under the glass’ SBA wireless module for SMART meters and realize the benefit this will bring to the utility industry, which increasingly is looking to close the gap on terrestrial wireless black-spots that prevent access to those hard to reach utility meters.”

Commenting on the franchised distribution agreement, Stani Licul, Founder and CEO, Maxtena Inc, said, “Alpha Micro Wireless demonstrates a keen understanding of its customer’s needs in the SMART Meter utility market and the role that SBA brings to the table. Maxtena’s Iridium-certified Helicore™ technology is the perfect complement for Iridium M2M and mobile applications and we are proud to partner with Alpha Micro Wireless in this industry leading initiative.”
