Avon Valley Sports College in Durrington opens brand new Fitness Centre for students and local community
£400,000 state-of-the-art gym and dance studio built with no capital outlay from the school
Students from Avon Valley Sports College in Durrington, Wiltshire, and its eight primary feeder schools are celebrating the imminent arrival of a new state-of-the-art gym and dance facility supplied free under a revenue share agreement with Competition Line, owner of the gym and fitness brand Lifestyle. The new facilities, valued at an estimated cost of £400,000, are set to play a key role in enhancing ‘active learning’ across all schools within the region. “It is also hoped that these excellent new facilities will help boost the general health and well being of fee paying local residents living within a 10 mile radius of the school – an estimated 20,000 people – when it opens its doors to the general public on Tuesday 3rd January 2012”, says Head Teacher Mark Avoth.
Featuring 33 machines from Technogym, a champion of world sport and sole supplier of gym equipment to the Athlete’s Village for the Olympics 2012, the new gym will include 6 treadmills, 6 cross trainers (3 different types), 5 bikes and a selection of free weight and functional cable resistance machines. A new building is currently being redeveloped to house the dance studio. This coupled with a new sports hall, Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) for netball and five-a-side football and a courtyard cafe for refreshments, is set to make Avon Valley College one of the best sporting facilities in the region.
“It’s a ‘win win’ situation for the college”, says Andy Davidson, Public Sector Manager, Technogym. “Unused or existing space is revitalised - new flooring, lighting and branding is installed – along with a brand new state-of-the art gym facility featuring cardio vascular and resistance stations at no cost to the college and no minimum income guarantee. Biomechanically sound, Technogym’s workstations are suitable for use by able and disabled athletes and students. All the school has to do is make their gym available to the local community outside school hours. Revenue generated is then shared between the school and the construction partner appointed by Technogym – helping to boost budgets for educational establishments, such as Avon Valley College, hit hard by the current public sector cuts.”
“Our partnership with Competition Line has enabled the College to realise three key objectives”, says Mark Avoth. “The first is to provide students with a top class fitness suite linked to Technogym’s Wellness System – one that is designed to encourage students to take ownership of their own fitness regimes. The second is to extend work-related opportunities for students – during the summer, some of our sixth formers will be working at the gym, undertaking apprenticeships, obtaining coaching qualifications and cleaning. The third is to create the best possible partnership with the local community, to be the hub, the centre of the community and realise our vision to be A Community at heart, at the heart of the Community”.
Concluding, Head Girl, Jacquie MacLean, said, “We were really thrilled to learn of the imminent arrival of these brilliant new free facilities. They will not only extend the opportunities for Avon Valley’s 650 11-18 year olds but also an estimated 350 year 5 and 6 pupils from Durrington Infants, Durrington All Saints Infants, Durrington CoE Junior School, Bulford St Leonards CoE Primary School, Figheldean St Michaels Cof E school, Kiwi School and Larkhill Primary School. Ooh! And of course my mum and dad when they join! It’s brilliant!”
Members of the general public keen to benefit from the new facilities can join the gym for just £19.99 per month for a 12 month period - a saving of approximately £15 per month on the fees charged by most gyms in the local area. Members who sign up before 31st December 2012 will benefit further from no joining fee and those who pay upfront for the whole year will qualify for 15 months for the price of 12.
