ClickView showcases latest developments in educational online video learning at Scottish Learning Festival 2012
New to the Scottish Learning Festival this year will be ClickView Online- a service which allows teachers and students to access their school’s video library whilst off campus. Also showcased will be ClickView 24-7, a 24 hour digital TV recording device, and ClickView Exchange, an online community where schools share recorded television content with each other. ClickView provides schools with high-quality, captivating educational video content from prestigious providers such as Classroom Video and Discovery Education, which with the addition of the new online version, is now available both on and off campus.
With ClickView Online, videos that are accessible on campus via the school’s server are now available to watch online through a web-browser. As with standard ClickView, videos are organised by subject area. Once a video has been selected, it begins playing straight away with each chapter loading one at a time, and full-screen mode means it can be just like watching TV. Users can skip through chapters to find the exact video content they are looking for and the videos either come with teaching resources or can have resources added, to help assist planning and give better use of the video in lessons. Particularly useful for homework setting, ClickView Online means that teachers can ask their class to watch a video at home and then use lesson time for discussion rather than as a viewing session.
Videos can also be viewed on an iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch simply by downloading the ClickView Player app from the App Store- perfect for those who do not have a PC or laptop at home, and for other occasions such as long school coach journeys. The combination of ClickView Online and the ClickView Player app means educational video content can now be viewed anytime, anywhere.
With ClickView 24-7, users can record any eight Freeview channels simultaneously, storing up to two weeks of standard definition TV. An unlimited number of additional ClickView 24-7 devices can also be connected, meaning more channels can be recorded.
Recorded TV shows can be searched for by keyword, or by title using the EPG (Electronic Programme Guide). Searches with keywords will even search subtitles, which are automatically captured, and return results of specific content within TV shows. The ability to search TV recordings using subtitles means users can quickly locate, group and organise subject and topic specific content. It also gives teachers the opportunity to show their class the variety of ways events can be reported on - something which is particularly relevant to current society with the phone-hacking scandal and ongoing Leveson Inquiry.
Editing tools allow the user to quickly locate TV show start and end times, remove ads, create chapters and then save directly into their ClickView library for immediate use.
Also featured will be ClickView Exchange, an online community for schools to share their television recordings with each other. The ClickView Exchange covers a wide variety of current and popular television programming with over 8,000 videos. Like the standard ClickView library, videos can be watched in full-screen mode and are also categorised by subject, making them easily searchable. This large selection of content includes documentaries, TV series, special programming, news, sports and feature films, with well-known titles such as the BBC’s Sherlock and David Attenborough’s epic documentary series Frozen Planet.
