Espresso helps schools succeed with new curriculum 2014 with ‘NC2014–ready’ primary content and new secondary Clipbank video resources

This year Espresso Group (stand D110) will be focusing its efforts on helping schools succeed with the new curriculum for 2014, offering new content, teacher support and video guides to the latest curriculum changes. It will be showcasing ‘NC2014-ready’ Espresso Primary modules addressing Grammar & Punctuation, Evolution, Times Tables, Geometry and Algebra and a new range of Clipbank video content for secondary schools. What’s more both these service are ready to be used on iPads and other tablets. Making its debut at the show will be a brand new collection of Key Stage 2 grammar and punctuation resources, designed to help teachers meet the demands of the DfE’s revised KS2 English curriculum which becomes statutory in 2014 and officially part of the SATs tests in 2016.

Comprising four modules – Word, Sentence, Text and Punctuation – the ‘Grammar and Punctuation’ resource includes over 30 fun and engaging videos with easy-to-follow explanations and demonstrations taught through entertaining animations designed to appeal to boys and girls equally. It also includes a range of activities designed to provide a 'learning pathway', a comprehensive glossary and teacher support notes and videos, ideal for school CPD sessions. 

Also new will be Espresso Coding, a brand new service from Espresso Education that teaches students Years 1-6 (KS 1 and 2) to code and make their own apps to share with their friends and parents. This simple yet powerful new tool provides an easy way for schools to deliver this new area of the computing curriculum that becomes mandatory from September 2014. With the global success of apps like Angry Birds, today’s pupils are very in tune with the concept of gaming Apps.  Espresso Coding draws on the excitement generated by Apps to engage pupils and take them through the process of coding. The ability to then share their own creations between friends and family helps to forge those home-school links and allows learning to spill over into home life in a very natural way. At last children have a great excuse to borrow mummy or daddy’s iPad!  

Espresso Coding includes a comprehensive scheme of work linked to the 2014 Curriculum, 78 step-by-step lessons and tablet-friendly activities, 100s of short, helpful video guides and a bespoke website where up to 500 apps per school can be published and shared.

The new module is packed full of support for teachers ranging from the technophobe to the tech savvy. The service includes a full scheme of work for those new to coding and there are numerous useful help videos for each of the lessons to which teachers can refer when planning lessons. For those teachers and students who want to progress further and stretch themselves the Coding module provides an opportunity to see, use and understand elements of JavaScript code.

Some breaking news for tablet crazy schools.... Espresso Primary has been busily upgrading its teaching and learning services to run on tablet computers and a range of mobile devices and the vast majority of its 1000s of activities are now compatible with tablets. Espresso has made this transition in order to respond to, and anticipate, customer needs, as new technologies are embraced in education, both inside and outside the classroom. An iPad and Android friendly version of Espresso Primary’s sister service for secondary schools, Channel 4 Learning ‘Clipbank’, is already available and being used in schools across England.

Secondary schools interested in new resources for English, literacy and drama are invited to view the latest content from Channel 4 Learning’s Clipbank which includes 12 brand new clips of Great Expectations going back to scenes from the classic 1946 David Lean adaptation; as well some footage specially shot by Espresso featuring Dickens expert Dr Gabrielle Mearns who looks at the themes, characters and Dickens' writing style in the novel.

Further resources designed to help teachers introduce literacy across the curriculum include 30 bespoke Grammar and Punctuation clips, focussing on topics ranging from identifying the active and passive voice in writing, to the correct use of brackets, dashes and commas.

New clips featuring the performance of Romeo & Juliet as staged by the National Theatre, as well as clips that explore the characters of the play, adaptations and Shakespeare's use of language are also included.
