Assistive technology specialists, Texthelp Ltd (www.texthelp.com), ushers in the new school term with a focus on providing literacy support to English language learners through Read&Write Tutor. This English language development software is designed to improve English learning skills for the 946,580 English as an Additional Language (EAL) students in primary and secondary schools and the 180,000 students taking English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes throughout the UK.

The latest attainment data from the National Association of Language Development in the Curriculum (NALDIC) shows an attainment gap between English language learning students and those of whom English is a first language, setting EAL & ESOL pupils at a disadvantage. In 2011, a lower percentage of EAL and bilingual students achieved the expected level in reading, writing, mathematics and science during key stages 1 and 2, achieving up to 8% less than those who speak English as a first language.

Helping EAL and ESOL students to bridge the gap, Read&Write Tutor from Texthelp Ltd includes features to support reading, writing improvement, speaking progress and listening development; helping all English language learners develop their English skills and improve academic results.

To enrich vocabulary and word context, word and picture dictionaries provide definitions of the selected word, a sample sentence and an image of the word. The Vocabulary Tool creates a revision sheet with the learner’s list of selected words, their dictionary definitions, images and a place for notes.

Written work can be checked through the Verb Checker which ensures that the correct verb conjugation is selected with a choice of past, present and future options. In addition to the talking spell checker, the Word Prediction feature helps ensure that all written communications are accurate, supporting spelling whilst widening vocabulary.

To assist word pronunciation and the development of oral and listening skills, the Text-to-Speech functionality in Read&Write Tutor helps improve English speaking skills, allowing learners to listen and repeat the text that is being read aloud on any application, including PDF, familiarising them with English intonation, inflection and expression. The Speech Maker allows learners to convert text into MP3 format to support learning 'on the go’.

Schools, Colleges, Universities, Corporates and individual users are choosing this powerful product to support their reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in English.
