On October 1st Expo 2020 opens in Dubai, where the Swedish Government together with the industry will present new technology and innovations on a global arena. As one of several official partners, LKAB is showcasing the most recent advances in the iron and steel industry that pave the way for a necessary global transition.

- There is tremendous global interest in what is happening in our part of the world right now. We are breaking new ground on the journey towards fossil-free iron and steelmaking, which is the greatest thing we can do together for the climate. Expo is a unique opportunity to place Sweden and LKAB on the map in relation to the sustainability challenges the world is facing and we hope that others will follow our example, says Jan Moström, LKAB's President and CEO.

The theme for Sweden's participation in Expo 2020 is "Co-creation for Innovation" and Sweden's pavilion will be situated within the Sustainability district. In the next six months Swedish companies will present world-leading solutions and innovativeness that foster sustainable development globally.

From northern Sweden to Dubai – local meets global
On location in Dubai, LKAB is presenting three strategically important co-creation projects in the Swedish pavilion. These include presentations of how we are Setting a new world standard for sustainable mining, how we are Producing carbon-dioxide-free sponge iron (DRI) for use in fossil-free steelmaking and how we are Extracting critical minerals from mine waste. LKAB will also set up several hybrid events during spring 2022 with a starting point in our operations in Kiruna. Together with our partners, we will host discussions concerning the industry transition and global sustainable development – directly from the world's largest underground iron ore mine.

- Our transition begins deep under ground, down in the mines; so why not show our reality as it is and invite visitors to our part of the world and our place in the value chain? Together with several of our close partners, we look forward to engaging in a number of interesting dialogues with speakers who are directly involved in our day-to-day operations above and below ground. We see this as a natural solution, considering the pandemic and the situation in the world, says Niklas Johansson, Senior Vice President Communication and Climate, LKAB.

The first World Expo took place 170 years ago, in London. The exhibition is not only an occasion to present new technology, but a platform for countries, companies, civil society and the public to meet, inspire, share innovation and foster international development and collaboration. After having been postponed due to the pandemic, this year's Expo will take place from October 1st, 2021 to March 31st, 2022.

LKAB took part in the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago, when Hjalmar Lundbohm was appointed state representative at the Swedish pavilion, and in Paris, in 1900, with a three-dimensional model of the mountain Kiirunavaara and the planned community of Kiruna.
