Sailors’ Society appeal for tributes to the world’s seafarers

For the fifth year running, the Sailors’ Society will be encouraging people to plant Red Ensign Flags in Trinity Gardens, London, in recognition of the part seafarers played in past conflicts and as a reminder of the crucial role they continue to play in our lives. The activity coincides with the Merchant Navy Association’s Service on Sunday 5th September and is extended to church services across the globe in solemn tribute to the contribution seafarers make to the world. Seafarers work in a harsh and dangerous environment, and the Sailors’ Society provides an international network of Port Chaplains who provide practical and spiritual support, and serve as a trusted and loyal friend to thousands of seafarers all over the world. Director of Fundraising Jan Webber said: “Every year we are overwhelmed by the numbers of people who choose to remember a lost loved one, or to honour a loved one currently working at sea. As 2010 is the International Maritime Organization’s Year of the Seafarer, this year’s tributes will be particularly poignant. We’re hoping that more people than ever will accept our invitation to offer their own tribute by planting a flag with a message on Merchant Navy Day.” The flags bearing heart warming messages are organised by the Sailors’ Society and will once again be planted to stand erect at Trinity Gardens alongside the many wreaths that are laid by veterans. All of the proceeds from the campaign will go towards supporting the work of the Sailors’ Society.
