Date: 06.11.09 David Gower scores high at Lord’s London Shipping Charity Dinner Over £15k raised for International seafarers’ charity Sailors’ Society The applause as David Gower sat down after speaking to 190 guests in the prestigious Long Room at Lord’s Cricket Ground was every bit as enthusiastic as when he reached a test century on the ground itself. Speaking about England’s Ashes win in the summer, with the first win at Lord’s in 75 years, and recounting his experiences as a celebrated Test Match Captain and cricketer, David kept the whole of the Long Room spellbound for almost an hour. Guests were hanging on every word, visualising each ball bowled, as it was described, interjected with humourous asides and timed pauses. In excess of £15k was raised at the dinner, sponsored by Brit Insurance, with 190 guests from the shipping industry coming together to support the international seafarers’ charity. David Gower, OBE – Guest Speaker David Gower, OBE, is well known for his cricketing success and is now the main commentator for international cricket coverage for Sky Sports. David rose to captaincy of the England cricket team during the 1980’s and is renowned for being one of the most stylish left-handed batsmen of the modern era. He played 117 test matches, scoring over 8,200 runs; he is thus one of the most capped One Day International players. David enjoyed one of the most prolific first-class cricket careers in English history, in both domestic and international competition. He retired from first-class cricket in 1993 with an impressive record having accumulated 26,339 runs averaging 40.08, with 53 centuries.
