Green-conscious competition winners announced

Two lucky winners, Dave Parker from Gosport and Shaun Bright from Locks Heath, have bagged themselves two tickets each to see ‘Dad’s Army Marches On’ at Fareham’s Ferneham Hall this weekend. They have both promised to lead by the example set by our wartime elders to walk and cycle more. Throughout May, Fareham Shopping Centre has been celebrating 70 years since the formation of the Home Guard by encouraging shoppers to ‘wage war against waste.’ Shoppers have been learning about waste, water and energy-saving measures that were commonplace during World War Two and discovering how modern-day equivalents can help the environment and save money today. What’s more, they’ve been logging on to the Centre’s website in their droves to make a pledge to recycle kitchen scraps, grow their own vegetables, or one of the many other promises available to choose from. Each pledge was entered into a prize draw and of the hundreds that were received, over 50% were to ‘Save Fuel for Britain’ by walking and cycling more. In the 1940s, both the Ministry of War and the Ministry of Transport and Labour encouraged people to travel shorter distances by foot rather than using public transport. Not only did this create space for those travelling on longer journeys, but it also helped free up the already overstretched transport system for the essential war effort. Centre Director, Pam Marsden, explains: “It would be great if we could all make a fraction of the effort that our grandparents made as, collectively, we can make a huge difference to the environment. Congratulations to our winners and well done to everyone who entered and made a promise to do their bit to reduce waste. I hope everyone will stick to the pledges they have made. ” Shoppers can still learn about the Home Guard and pick up some ‘green’ wartime tips by visiting the display in the Centre’s Green Zone, outside Store Twenty One - or they can go online at www.farehamshopping.com. Although the competition has closed, the information is still available to see and ‘2for1 on Hot Meals’ vouchers, to redeem at Café Giardino, can also be downloaded until 25th June. -Ends- Words: 371 ***Scroll down to download an image of the winners with the Dad's Army Cast*** Notes to the Editor For further editorial information about Fareham Shopping Centre please contact Colin Salt at Logical Creative Marketing on 0845 345 6969 or email colins@lcm.co.uk To contact the Centre Director, call Pam Marsden on 01329 822506.
