Rio Tinto Marine organise cricket match raises money for Sailors’ Society

As part of their fundraising drive to honour the Year of the Seafarer, Rio Tinto Marine organised a cricket match last month to raise funds for global charity, Sailors’ Society. Held at Ceylon Cricket Club in Singapore, the event saw a team of Rio Tinto Mariners take on a team comprised of the Rest of the Industry – named ‘The Pirates’. The cricket match was followed by a reception at the Singapore Cricket Club where presentations were made for achievements on the field. The Sailors’ Society was delighted to receive donations totalling £6K from participating teams. Director of Fundraising Jan Webber said: “We’d like to thank Rio Tinto Marine for organising such a fantastic event. Everyone had a great time, and the event helped to raise funds for the Sailors’ Society’s international work. Having such a high profile event in the IMO Year of the Seafarer also helps us to raise awareness of the plight of seafarers across the world that are something of a ‘forgotten workforce’. So much of the world of commerce relies on the shipping industry and for this event, Rio Tinto Marine brought together some of the leading figures in the shipping industry to pay their own tribute to the seafarers who face months of isolation and dangerous conditions at sea.” As well as organisers Rio Tinto Marine many other companies contributed to the event, including Clarksons, Pacific Carriers, Nordea Bank and Simpson Spence & Young.
