Legal Secretary embarks on epic charity adventure across the Sahara

Marie Green, a litigation secretary at Gardner Leader Solicitors in Newbury, has travelled to North Africa this week and has embarked on a 100km trek across the Sahara Desert. With the help of her colleagues and management at the Newbury-based law firm, she has raised over £2,000 for charity and is looking forward to an experience of a lifetime. Marie tells people in jest that she signed-up in a moment of insanity, but her true inspiration is a good friend who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2009. She is completing the trek in honour of him and to raise money for Help for Heroes, a charity which provides support to servicemen and women wounded in the line of duty in the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. With fluctuating temperatures which will reach the mid 30s in the day and drop to 8 degrees at night, Marie will take 6 days to complete her journey, walking approximately 10 miles a day, with a train of camels and 50 or so fellow walkers. Marie has been preparing for the expedition for the last 6 months and comments: “I have found training really tough and recently walked 11 miles in four hours – it nearly killed me! The sense of achievement is going to be so immense, the cause is so worthwhile and I can’t wait to experience the sights and sounds of the desert.” She adds: “I’m not looking forward to the scorpions and camel spiders though.” Chris Felton, Litigation Partner at Gardner Leader comments: “We’re all so proud of Marie and in awe of the challenge she has set herself. It has been our great pleasure to support her fundraising efforts and wish her the best of luck next week.” If you want to support Marie by making a donation, visit her justgiving page at www.justgiving.com/Marie-Green or follow the link at www.gardner-leader.co.uk
