St John’s College in Southsea enjoyed another fun-filled Friday morning, this time celebrating Diwali, the Hindu ‘festival of light’.

Nursery and Pre-Prep children spent the morning tasting Indian foods, making rangoli patterns from beans and pulses and having their hands decorated with traditional mendhi patterns. They also made diva lamp mobiles. The children were very excited by the ‘exploring light’ activity, where they were given glow sticks and torches to explore in a dark room. Tony Shrubsall, Head of Lower School said, ‘Understanding a range of faiths is important to the College as part of the Religious Education programme. We encourage the children to learn about other religions and it was great to have parents attend our special assembly to begin the day.’ If you would like to arrange a visit to the School please contact 023 9281 5118 or visit www.stjohnscollege.co.uk . The next open morning is Tuesday 18th January 2011. -Ends- Word Count: 151
