29 September 09 murphx to trial BT’s FTTC ISP of The Year murphx is continuing to explore new ways to push the boundaries of the services it offers with its decision to trial BT’s Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) technology. Following upgrades with fibre-optic broadband at BT’s exchanges in Muswell Hill in London, Whitchurch (Cardiff) and Glasgow Halfway, nearby residents could be able to access the Internet at speeds of up to 40MB per second – more than 12 times faster than the current UK average. During the pilot scheme participants will be encouraged to put pressure on their broadband connection by, for example, downloading high density films and simultaneously participating in online gaming to test how the system will cope with such demands. Carl Churchill, murphx Director, says: “We are committed to being at the forefront of any technological development that improves the service we provide. It is very exciting to be a part of these trials to offer a significantly faster download and a 2MB upload speed in the first phase with the second phase of testing encompassing a 5MB upload product towards the end of the year. “In the long-term, this faster capability will improve customer experience when using applications such as VoIP and video conferencing. In some instances DVD quality film could be downloaded in 11 minutes as opposed to the two-and-a-quarter hours it takes on average using current copper wire broadband technology. “BT expects this service to be rolled out commercially in 2010, with an estimated 10 million homes receiving next generation broadband in 2012 and we want to ensure we can provide full accessibility to our customers.” Fibre to the cabinet technology limits the loss introduced by long reaching copper lines between the end user premise and the local exchange. By only using copper from the site to the local cabinet the largest element of the backhaul is delivered over fibre allowing services to be offered at higher speeds than standard copper based DSL services. -ENDS- Word count: 254 words Jpeg: Carl Churchill Notes to Editors: Please be aware that murphx is always spelt with a lower case “m”.
