Date: 21.08.09 Runners urged to race for charity Great South Run –a great opportunity to raise funds for Sailors’ Society Entrants into this year’s Great South Run are being urged to put their best feet forward for a good cause by international seafarers’ charity, Sailors’ Society. The Hampshire-based charity, which supports seafarers through a network of Port Chaplains across the globe, is encouraging budding athletes, who already have places confirmed for the October event, to raise funds and run for Sailors’ Society. Events Fundraiser Vicky MacLeod explained: ”Over 95% of world trade, upon which we all depend, is transported by sea. Seafarers live a dangerous and isolated life, they spend many months away from loved ones and their jobs are even more hazardous with the ongoing threat of piracy. Sailors’ Society supports them during their limited time ashore, helping them to contact families and buy supplies. We also help seafarers and their families in times of need, for example in bereavement and in situations where there are victims of piracy.” The Great South Run takes place on 25 October 2009 in Portsmouth, taking in the historic sites of the Royal Naval Dockyard, Spinnaker Tower and views across the Solent on the 10 mile run. Existing to enrich and enhance the well-being of the world’s 1.2 million seafarers, the charity offers practical help, emotional and spiritual support and, when in dire need, financial assistance and family liaison through our Port Chaplains and Seafarers’ Centres. Our Port Chaplains visit thousands of ships every year, directly addressing the needs of seafarers - irrespective of a person’s belief or nationality - as well as maintaining vital links within the Ports that they operate.
