06.07.09 2012 Olympic Rowing site used for seafarers’ charity fundraising Over 100 competitors raised £50,000 for the international seafarers’ charity, Sailors’ Society at the bi-annual Dragon Boat Challenge held at Dorney Lake, the site for the 2012 Olympic rowing events. Fourteen teams took part in the event representing: London Offshore Consultants, the marine travel company, Rio Tinto, Thomas Miller, Baltic Exchange, Clarksons, Cargill London and Geneva, INTERTANKO, Inchcape Shipping Services, Gartner and Charles Taylor & Co, all entering at least one team. The event was sponsored by Rightship, INTERTANKO and Cargill. Clarksons’ Team Sweet FFA - took the winner’s trophy with a time of 61.49 seconds beating London Offshore Consultants – Choc-a-BLOC by just half a second in the final. The runners-up had the consolation of winning the trophy for raising the most money. Event Fundraiser Felicity Patterson said: “Our thanks go to our sponsors, all the competitors and those who donated. We all rely on seafarers as 95% of our goods are brought by sea, so it was good to generate much needed financial support for seafarers whilst having fun taking part in this Challenge.’ She added: “We were blessed with fabulous weather on the day and the event couldn’t have gone any better. Congratulations to all the winners and our thanks also go to all the supporters of the Dragon Boat competitors.” Peter Swift, Managing Director of INTERTANKO added: “This was a fun day, enjoyed by all and for an excellent cause. We are proud to have sponsored the Sailors’ Society and encourage everyone to keep supporting the charity in all of their future events and activities. Their work is truly inspirational.’ The Dragon Boat Challenge will next take place in 2011. Fundraising events in 2010 include the popular Sailors’ Society Three Peaks Challenge and the new Sailors’ Society Wilderness Triathlon. The Society is now promoting its London Shipping Dinner on 29th October 2009 in the Long Room at Lords Cricket Club, where David Gower will be the Guest Speaker. Notes to Editors: The Sailors' Society is an inter-denominational charity which replaces isolation with belonging amongst seafarers throughout the world. Through a network of Port Chaplains and Seafarers’ Centres, operating in 30 countries in almost 100 Ports, the Society aims to enhance and enrich the lives of the 1.2million seafarers who often lead dangerous and lonely lives at sea, many miles from home. The Port Chaplains visit thousands of ships every year, directly addressing the needs of seafarers - irrespective of a person’s belief or nationality. A reassuring presence for both current and retired seafarers and their families, the Society offers practical help, which can be as little as the resource to contact loved ones after months away, to spiritual assistance and counselling in times of need. Port Chaplains focus on improving the quality of seafarers’ lives, as well as maintaining vital links within the Ports that they operate.
