Woking youngsters presented with new minibus

TV personality Diana Moran – the ‘Green Goddess’ - and representatives of the Lord’s Taverners and Lady Taverners will visit Woking next week (Tuesday 29 April) to present a new wheelchair accessible minibus to staff and children of The Park School. Media are welcome to attend the presentation at 9.30am for interview, photography or video opportunities.

The Park School is a special needs secondary school for 100 children aged 11-16 with moderate learning difficulties. The school has a language specialism permeating the curriculum with one third of its students being described as having language resource placements.

The new 16-seat wheelchair accessible minibus from the Lord’s Taverners, costing £48,000, will provide the pupils with access to college link courses, residential trips and sporting activities, all of which are essential for student development.

The Lord’s Taverners, the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity, will donate over £3 million this year to help give disadvantaged and disabled young people a ‘sporting chance’ in life. The charity has put over 1,050 minibuses on the road since 1976, enabling over 20,000 young people with disabilities to enjoy new places and experiences every year.

The minibus has been made possible thanks to the generosity of family, friends and colleagues of Mike Gorman, who sadly died of cancer last year.  Mike was a Lord’s Taverner, former teacher and advertising executive from Hindhead who strongly believed in helping young people realise their full potential. His wife, Rosemary, said he would be “so proud and honoured to have a minibus dedicated to him and given to an outstanding local Surrey school.”

Paul Robin, Chief Executive of the Lord’s Taverners, said: “The Lord's Taverners believes that sport and recreation are essential for all young people, particularly those with special needs. This minibus will help the youngsters of The Park School to get out and enjoy new places and experiences. We are proud to support the staff, parents and young people of The Park School and to remember Mike Gorman in such a fitting way.”
