The fluid and versatile Nafir pendant light gets its name from a North African musical instrument used in ceremonial music. Nafir is available either as a single suspension light or grouped in multiples and it’s offered in a choice of chrome, white or gold finishes. Each fixture is made from a single piece of injection-molded ABS plastic. Nafir was specifically conceived to offer endless configurations, to suit any size interior, from a small residential dining room to a grand restaurant. “The geometry is coincident to one another,” says Rashid, “so they naturally fit together allowing for a infinite number of compositions when grouped.” The collection, which Rashid calls a “functional sculpture” to “complement sound,” was awarded a 2012 Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum.
Designed to suit both residential and commercial spaces, Rashid created Nafir with fluidity and flexibility in mind. “For 20 years now,” says the internationally renowned and prolific designer, “I have been fascinated by flat surfaces being pulled and morphed, creating a new fluid form. Originally, I imagined a plane that was being pulled upward, by several points, to its electrical contact on the ceiling. By doing this manipulation to the surface, Nafir began to look like trumpets, organic/fluid forms. I wanted to make a fixture that was part sculpture, one that looked beautiful even with the lights turned off, yet provided perfect functional LED light.”
Rashid is known for his creative melding of form and technology, and his Nafir Collection for Axo Light embodies the designer’s proclivity for sleek and minimal lines, combined with the latest in material innovation.
