The Swedish soprano Nina Stemme has been appointed Honorary Doctor by the Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts at Lund University.

Nina Stemme is one of the foremost singers of today. Her international career has involved high-profile appearances at the most prestigious international opera stages, such as in London, Paris, New York (Metropolitan), Berlin, Milan (La Scala) and Vienna (Wiener Staatsoper).

She is very versatile and has sung major roles in Puccini’s, Verdi’s and Richard Strauss’ operas, but above all, she has become known as one of the major contemporary Wagner interpreters with leading roles such as Isolde and Brünnhilde. She also has a comprehensive and critically acclaimed discography.

Last spring, she starred in Richard Strauss’s opera Elektra and performed to great acclaim at the Wiener Staatsoper. This past year, she has also had major success performing in Turandot at La Scala in Milan, and at the summer opera festival in Dalhalla.

Nina Stemme was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music in 2004. A few years later she was appointed Court Singer, and in 2008 she received the medal Litteris et Artibus. She was also named Austrian Kammersängerin in 2012, which is only one of many examples of all the international prizes and awards she has won.

Nina Stemme received the Lund University Male Voice Choir soloist award in 2015. She also starred in Hans Gefors’s newly composed opera Notorious, which was performed at the Gothenburg Opera in the autumn of 2015. Hans Gefors was the first professor of composition at the Malmö Academy of Music, and was one of the first at Lund University to attain a PhD in artistic research.

The Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts at Lund University is very pleased and proud to be able to appoint Nina Stemme as Honorary Doctor and thereby acknowledge her great work on the Swedish and international music scene.
