Sweden’s Lund University benefiting from Britain’s tuition fee fall-out?
As Britain raises the level of domestic student tuition fees, one Swedish university has so far received more than double the number of applications from British students compared to last year, during the opening weeks of their international application round.
“Although it is still early in the application period, this is an intriguing increase because Britain has not typically been a key country from where we recruit international students. However this year, alongside China and the USA, Britain is suddenly one of the top countries from where we are receiving applications,” says Richard Stenelo, head of international recruitment at Lund University in southern Sweden.
There are no tuition fees for Swedish, British or other EU/EEA students at Lund University, but tuition fees do apply for students from outside the EU/EEA.
“Clearly tuition-free study at a top-100 university is an attractive option for British students in the face of trebled tuition fee levels in England,” Mr Stenelo says.
Lund University’s application round opened on 1 December and closes 17 January for studies commencing in autumn 2011 (late August).
