The world’s oldest photography magazine is now bang up to date

LONDON, STOCKHOLM and NEW YORK, 5 September 2011 – British Journal of Photography (BJP) – the original photography magazine, published for over 150 years, launches its first iPad issue this week (September 7), using Mag+.

The hugely respected global magazine brings stunning visuals to life, and explores the relationship between still and moving images in a brilliant demonstration of what Mag+’s tablet publishing software can do.

Using Mag+, the new iPad edition of BJP allows every page to be emailed and shared online, whether readers have an iPad or not. It also boasts video content ready to play even without an internet connection, and brings the world’s longest running photography magazine truly into the digital age.

Mag+ is the flexible, accessible, affordable platform for publishers of all sizes to create immersive content tailored for touchscreen tablets. It is the flagship product of Moving Media+, which has already taken dozens of magazines and other publications on to iPad. Moving Media+ CEO Staffan Ekholm says, “As a company, we are committed to putting creatives in the driving seat of the tablet publishing revolution. For us, the iPad edition of BJP is truly inspired. Incisive Media has used our software to create a wonderful new experience for readers.”

Incisive Media’s Tablet Development Manager Tom Royal says, “Mag+ has allowed us to replicate the unique identity and content of the British Journal of Photography, in a format that really works on iPad. This is not just a digital page-turner, but a custom-designed interactive magazine that takes full advantage of the tablet.”

Royal adds that translating a print title to a tablet such as iPad can feel like a choice between fast systems that create only limited results, or more interactive ones that are laborious to use. But, he says, “Mag+ gives us the best of both worlds: a quick transition from InDesign to iPad, with a layout designed for the tablet and the room to add any custom interactive elements we can dream up.

“It’s also easy to use – new designers are able to create pages and test them on iPad after just an hour or two of training.”

Royal will also be keeping a keen eye on the developing Android market. He says, “One of the reasons we chose Mag+ is that it can support both.”

The first iPad issue of BJP includes a focus on photographers who have moved from still images to shooting motion pictures. It also offers hundreds of pages of photography, features, projects, intelligence, and technical reviews.

The new BJP App, and Issue 1, is completely free to download.
