Digital entrepreneur reveals ‘The Worst Kept Secret’

Interview/Case Study

Andrew Davis is one of the UK’s leading authorities on digital and social media.  In 2009, he founded digital training and social media consultancy The Worst Kept Secret and went on to become the only person to be named in both Media Week’s ‘30 under 30′ and Broadcast magazine’s ‘Hot Shots’.  He is credited with creating the UK’s first GCSE-linked social media course.

In an interview with new online business incubator My Incubator Ventures Andrew Davis revealed how his business got started.

“Having graduated in Business Studies, my first role was moderating online forums and chatrooms for Sony Playstation, Pop Idol, Friends Reunited and Liverpool FC.  I also helped launch BBC 1Xtra and MySpace.

“At MySpace, I was doing a lot of training and, as social media was so new, there weren’t many people doing it.  Setting up a training company was the natural next step and I managed to get large clients quickly.”

But all was not plain sailing and Andrew faced difficulties in getting financial support: “I had the door slammed in my face every time - maybe because it was too early for people to understand. I ended up self-financing.”

However, consistency and delivering results paid off for Andrew and today a lot of the company’s business is based on referrals

Davis is a passionate advocate of using social media to grow businesses and advises entrepreneurs to use social media tools such as Hootsuite, Topsy and BuzzSumo for planning and managing campaigns and analyzing online trends.

“It is important to have a voice that your target audience can hear,” said Andrew. “Five years ago it was very tough and expensive. Now, by a clever or even simple marketing campaign, you can become known and build a viable business relatively quickly.”
