Contracting could be the answer for graduates breaking into the engineering sectors, says leading recruitment specialist
Engineering students from the University of Birmingham joined Jonathan Lee Recruitment in a careers day skills programme, designed to improve employability.
Undergraduate students from the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Birmingham benefited from a skills programme designed to strengthen their employability skills. The event was organised by the University’s Careers Network Team in conjunction with specialist engineering recruitment agency, Jonathan Lee Recruitment.
The workshop, which was delivered to a group of 30 students, enabled aspiring engineers and scientists to participate in a range of activities designed to outline and provide basic understanding of the recruitment process and the information required to create a successful CV. The programme details how students can utilise recruitment consultancies before reaching graduation in order to secure industry placements, graduate schemes and entry level positions, while also providing guidance on how to work with job boards and recruitment agencies to reach employment.
Representatives from Jonathan Lee Recruitment were able to enlighten the students with a presentation, which outlined the range of opportunities available to new recruits when searching for full time recruitment. Contracting, for example, is often perceived as ‘short-term temping’ but is a proven to be an ideal way of gaining valuable experience and skill sets, which are required to break into the engineering sectors.
“Jonathan Lee Recruitment has a strong partnership with the University of Birmingham having presented to undergraduate students for the past three years,” says Jessica Williams, Recruiter at Jonathan Lee Recruitment. “We had a great time meeting the students and getting to know their concerns and fears regarding leaving university and entering the world of employment. It was a fantastic opportunity to impart advice and provide guidance to the next generation of engineers.”
Williams adds: “We feel that it is important to open student’s minds to the many different paths available to them when securing their first job. Equally, in order to improve chances of securing employment, it is important that students understand how to attract potential employers’ attention by creating a strong CV. We often receive hundreds of applicants for a single position and it is crucial that a CV stands out from the crowd. “
