Federal-Mogul DEVA Bearing Material Helps Reduce Marine Pollution

Self-lubricating bearing material provides robust and environmentally sound solution for controlled pitch propeller applications

Stadtallendorf, Germany, 18 July 2016 Federal-Mogul Powertrain, a division of Federal-Mogul Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: FDML), is supplying its DEVA bearings to the global shipbuilding industry to reduce the environmental impact of propeller lubrication.

Today’s most efficient propellers use controlled pitch blades which move in relation to the hub, reducing fuel consumption and CO2emissions by continually optimizing the blade angle. These propellers require a low-wear bearing surface at the point of mounting, where regulations impose strict limitations on the use of lubricants. Federal-Mogul Powertrain’s deva.bm®material provides an environmentally sound and reliable long-term solution, reducing downtime and extending the time between overhauls.

Visitors to SMM, the Shipbuilding, Machinery and Marine technology trade show that takes place in September in Hamburg, Germany, will see a range of DEVA bearing technologies for marine applications on display at the Federal-Mogul Powertrain booth.

“Federal-Mogul Powertrain works continuously with its customers to reduce the environmental impact and improve the performance of their products,” stated Gian Maria Olivetti, Chief Technology Officer, Federal-Mogul Powertrain. “Using deva.bm bearing material in controlled pitch propeller (CPP) applications allows our customers to achieve low CO2emissions by using the most efficient propeller designs while avoiding concerns about pollution resulting from leakages of lubricating oil.”

The Vessel General Permit (VGP) 2013 environmental regulations restrict the use of lubricating oils that can come into contact with sea water. Biodegradable oils are less strictly controlled, but not always an effective solution for CPP applications. Produced using a special sintering process, deva.bm is a self-lubricating composite bearing material that comprises a seawater resistant stainless steel backing with a sliding layer of deva.metal®. Because the bearing can run either dry or with water as a lubricant and has a high static and dynamic load capacity, it is ideal for use with CPPs – a solution that has been adopted by a number of market-leading companies in Europe which are now using the material.

“The deva.bm technology is suitable for rotational, oscillating and linear movements – even micro movements,” explained Federal-Mogul Powertrain DEVA Offshore and Marine Applications Manager, Hubert Hilp. “Because it requires no lubrication, it is maintenance-free and by providing static and dynamic coefficients of friction that are both low and similar, it improves efficiency and reduces stick-slip.”

Federal-Mogul Powertrain DEVA will be showcasing a range of bearing technologies at SMM, the Shipbuilding, Machinery and Marine technology trade show that will take place in Hamburg, Germany, from 6 – 9 September, 2016. The company is at Booth 205, in Hall A3.
