Wiesbaden, Germany, 27 April 2015… Federal-Mogul Powertrain, a division of Federal-Mogul Holdings Corporation (NASDAQ: FDML), was the recipient of two 2015 Automotive News PACE™ Awards at a ceremony on April 20 in Detroit. The prestigious award recognizes automotive suppliers for superior innovation, technological advancement and business performance.

The company earned PACE awards for its MicroTorq® Seal and DuroGlide® Low Friction Ring Pack technologies. Additionally, Federal-Mogul Powertrain was a finalist for its High Precision Bearing Profiling manufacturing process technology.

“We’re deeply honored for this recognition from PACE,” said Gian Maria Olivetti, vice president, technology and innovation, Federal-Mogul Powertrain. “We pride ourselves in creating highly-engineered powertrain solutions that are both innovative and sustainable and each of these PACE finalists, especially the winners, demonstrates that commitment.”

Overview of Technologies

MicroTorq is an innovative elastomeric shaft seal that addresses the automotive industry’s need for reduced parasitic power losses.  MicroTorq reduces frictional losses by up to 80% versus comparable designs, and CO2 reduction of up to 1.5 g/km per engine.  The new design concept relies on a dual-hinge flex section to maintain uniform contact with the rotating shaft without creating high loads and without jeopardizing the durability or reliability of an engine, and is capable of performing under all engine application conditions.

The company’s breakthrough DuroGlide low-friction piston ring pack features a highly innovative surface coating based on its diamond-like carbon structure. It sets a new standard in piston ring technology for next-generation engines, providing extremely low wear and very high scuff resistance for a life of up to one million miles driven. DuroGlide is suitable for both gasoline and diesel applications and has demonstrated friction loss reduction up to 20% with significant fuel economy advantages and CO2 reduction of up to 1.5%.

Federal-Mogul Powertrain’s High Precision Bearing Profiling (HPP) technology is an innovative manufacturing process capable of establishing customized profiles as low as one micron at the bearing surface to advance the overall performance of an engine bearing. It helps to optimize the bearing’s ability to maintain a minimal oil-film between the bearing and the crankshaft, thus creating a custom solution that fits each engine’s characteristics.

Federal-Mogul Powertrain has had a successful history with PACE, the recipient of 15 awards since 2003. The company received a PACE award in 2014 for its lead-free engine bearings; two PACE awards in 2013 for its IROX® Engine Bearings and High Modulus Bonded Piston Technology; an award in 2012 for its Two-Dimensional Ultrasonic Testing for Raised Gallery Pistons; two awards in 2011 for its EcoTough®-coated piston and LKZ-Ring® oil control ring and three awards in 2010 for its DuraBowl® piston reinforcement process, High Precision Electro-Erosion Machining (HPEEM) manufacturing process and Bayonet Connection System for profile wiper blades. The company also was honored with PACE Awards for its High-Temperature Alloy (HTA) gaskets and Goetze® Diamond Coating (GDC®) for piston rings in 2007, for its Monosteel® diesel piston in 2006 and for its Wagner® ThermoQuiet® brake pads and shoes in 2003.

The 21st annual PACE (Premier Automotive Suppliers' Contribution to Excellence) Award was presented by Automotive News, EY and Transportation Research Center Inc. (TRC Inc.).  The competition was open to suppliers who contribute products, processes, materials or services directly to the manufacture of cars or trucks.  The Automotive News PACE Award is accepted around the world as the industry symbol of innovation.

Federal-Mogul Powertrain earned the Automotive News PACE Award following an extensive review by an independent panel of judges including a comprehensive written application and site visit.  For complete details of the Automotive News PACE Award, visit www.autonews.com/pace.
