Diesel additive uprates the performance of basic fuel to improve fuel consumption

24 April 2014, Brighouse, England – Despite the recent fall in fuel prices, transport budgets remain under pressure. Millers Oils is bringing its Eclipse™ additive to the rail sector, to help operators improve fuel economy, lower emissions and maintain locomotive reliability.

“Within the rail industry, there is a lack of investment in new diesel locomotives and operators must find ways to ensure ageing vehicles remain reliable throughout their extended lifetimes,” says Martyn Mann, Technical Director, Millers Oils. “Like those working in the heavy-duty CV and automotive markets, rail operators are looking for ways in which they can improve fuel economy and reduce emissions while keeping within ever-restricting budgets. Our Eclipse additive provides a cost-effective solution and helps to keep fleets in the best possible condition.”

The British oil developer originally developed Eclipse™ to help road-haulage fleets reap the fuel economy benefits and lower emissions of premium fuel blends and maintain their fleet while lowering overhead costs.

“The additive is a balanced formulation, including detergency and lubricity improvers, that works in harmony with standard fuels to progressively clean and protect the fuel system,” explains Millers Oils technical director, Martyn Mann. “Fuel injectors remain cleaner for longer, fuel pump wear is reduced and the whole system is better protected against corrosion. Regular use of Eclipse™ significantly reduces the overall running costs of diesel locomotives.”

Added to the fuel at the rate of one part per thousand (1ml per litre), Eclipse™ boosts the Cetane number of the fuel by up to 4 points, and cleans away the carbon deposits that can build up imperceptibly over time, improving combustion and engine cleanliness. The result is smoother, quieter running with reduced hydrocarbon (HC) and CO2emissions.

“Over the past couple of years, we have seen a rise in the purchases of high performance fuels, as customers recognise the fuel economy and performance benefits they have. Our additive provides a safe, cost-effective alternative to premium fuels, supplying the improved performance and engine cleanliness operators are looking for,” continues Mann.

About Millers Oils

Millers Oils was founded in 1887 by John Watson Miller, and since then the company has displayed a talent for innovation and industry firsts.  It was the first to offer diesel specific engine oil for cars and continues to push boundaries to earn its place as a world leader in the technology of low friction.  In January 2012, Millers Oils launched nanotechnology engine oils. When tested against a competitor’s oil of the same viscosity, Nanodrive recorded 40% lower friction at operating temperatures of 110°C, with significantly improved film strength.  Millers Oils uses the expertise gained in motorsport and performance car development to ensure it remains a leader in automotive and commercial vehicle oils and a broad range of industrial lubricants.
