Brave Miss Bolton and Bury bungee jumps for charity
Reigning Miss Bolton and Bury, Laura Collins of Bolton-based tax planning and investment specialist OneE Group has completed a 300ft bungee jump as part of her ongoing charity work to raise money for disadvantaged children.
Laura, who joined OneE Group in May as a Tax Associate, is currently working towards her LPC and LLM legal qualifications as well as the Miss England 2015 finals which take place in August.
If that wasn’t enough, she has also raised £1,650 for a number of charities including Beauty with a Purpose which helps disadvantaged children around the world.
Leading such a busy lifestyle, Laura says that she didn’t have enough time to worry about the prospect of throwing herself off the side of a 300ft crane – until the day itself came along.
She said: “I have been so busy lately with fundraising and other events in the local area, I didn’t really have the opportunity to get nervous until I drove to Salford Quays. At this point, I became really nervous! Having previously done a sky dive from 15,000ft, I don’t have a problem with heights and wasn’t scared at all by the jump, but I have been terrified of open water since I was a child. Standing at the top, looking down into the water, I started to get panicky.
“When I had seen some other participants doing it without any problems – and going nowhere near the water – I just went for it! The jump itself felt like it happened in slow motion. I have done a sky dive before but it wasn’t nearly as exhilarating as the bungee jump – the rush was amazing!
“While the jump was both fun and scary, I had the very serious purpose of raising money for exceptionally worthy causes. Having travelled to a number of places in the third world, I have seen first-hand how important it is to support children all over the world. This is why I raise money for several charities at once – some local, some national and some international.”
Laura’s charity work hasn’t stopped there and for her next good deed she will be living below the poverty line to raise awareness for children living in poverty who have to do the same.
“For the next four weeks I am going to be living below the poverty line and spending just £1 per day on food. I chose to do this because many of the children who I am raising money for live off far less. I think it is important to learn about wastefulness and to appreciate one’s blessings. I will be donating the money I would usually spend on food to BWP and I am trying to encourage people to do this for a day and donate what they would usually spend on food.”
