PALLETLINE BECOMES FIRST NETWORK TO REDUCE WEIGHT LIMITS
Leading UK palletised distribution network Palletline is proud to announce that it has taken the bold decision to improve health and safety processes by becoming the first operator to reduce the maximum weight of pallets on tail lift deliveries to 750kg.
The move was confirmed after an overwhelming majority of Palletline Members backed it at a recent network member meeting amid increasing industry concerns over the impact that heavier pallets have on driver safety. The new weight limit is due to come into force on 01 October 2015.
Pallets up to the 1,250kg maximum will still be handled through the network, however those above 750kg will not be delivered on a tail lift vehicle.
Graham Leitch, managing director, Palletline said the move increases safety standards for drivers and shows that the network is leading the way, setting an example and inspiring change across the transport and logistics industry.
“Palletline is handling greater volumes than ever before, yet we continue to enhance our health and safety processes which means we continue to be recognised as an industry leader that wins awards and recognition for our high standards. With this in mind and as a network that truly values the work of its employees and members – we realise that a quality, efficient service should never put anybody at risk – so we have made a brave and pioneering decision that will help protect staff and should set an industry precedent.
“I know the majority of pallet networks are in favour of reducing limits, however Palletline is proud to be the first network to take action and put the safety of drivers ahead of commercial considerations. Embracing the measure early has provided members of Palletline with the opportunity to open discussions with their customers enabling them to review their own processes, minimise any impact, stay ahead of their competition and demonstrate commitment to driver safety.”
Palletline is a nationwide, member-owned cooperative network with more than 6,000 vehicles, 12,000 staff and access to over five million square feet of warehousing space.
The network, which won the ROSPA Gold Award 2014 and Motor Transport’s Safety in Operation Award in 2013, provides high quality, time sensitive collection and delivery services to a diverse range of customers, including retailers, home delivery firms, manufacturers and construction companies.
Graham concludes: “Moving forwards we would urge all pallet networks to consider introducing the measure in order that we can continue to improve health and safety standards across the industry.”
