Sweden’s largest national laboratory MAX IV announces Open Day, the biggest public event for the facility, will commence on 16 September 2023. The schedule includes interactive science stations, activities for children, and the opportunity to tour designated sections of the laboratory and ask questions of staff scientists and engineers. In the large ring, visitors can meet with exhibitors such as neighbouring laboratory ESS, the Lund University robotics lab with Boston Robotics Buster, the robot dog, TetraPak, and Vattenhallen among others. The event offers visitors the chance to explore and learn about X-ray science and how research is done.

MAX IV Open Day brings the public inside the synchrotron facility for an eyes-wide view of the powerful beamlines and high-precision equipment required to measure and study objects at the atomic level. Scientists from all over the world come to MAX IV to use the instruments for studies on catalysts, human proteins, and plant genetics to biofuels, graphene, and archaeological objects.

“All of MAX IV’s staff looks forward to welcoming the public for an exciting time at MAX IV Open Day. It’s our mission to champion the benefits of science and there is so much we want to share about the laboratory and the research conducted here. We believe you will very much enjoy the engaging programme we have planned. Join us and learn something new about the world of X-ray science! We hope to see you inside MAX IV at Open Day,” said Olof Karis, Director of MAX IV.

Over a dozen hands-on activities are planned for visitors indoors including experiments with magnets, crafting, photobooth, and ‘dress up like a scientist’ to name a few. Outdoors, there will be fun for children like a bounce house and tipsrunda, plus food trucks on premise for purchase of food and drink.

“This is our first Open Day event in 5 years, and we couldn't be more excited to open our doors to science lovers of all ages,” said Heidi LaGrasta, MAX IV Outreach Officer and event organiser. “Many people in Lund don't know exactly what happens inside our building, and I hope they are able to take this opportunity to come and find out! The research that is conducted here is truly groundbreaking, and we are looking forward to sharing it with our community.”

MAX IV Open Day will take place from 9:00-16:00, with free entry for adults and children. Participants must register for the event, and the ticket registration page is found on the MAX IV website. The number of tickets is limited for guest and staff safety.

Visitors can reach MAX IV by bike, and tram or bus, which both stop in front of the facility. Limited parking is available. The address is Fotongatan 2, Lund.
