Total treatment time with Carisolv in root caries is equivalent to drilling A study published in the latest issue of Caries Research shows that treatment with Carisolv does not take any more time in practice than drilling. The result of one-year check-ups were equivalent in the two groups and 85% of patients preferred Carisolv to drilling. The latest issue of Caries Research (2000;34; 275-280) carries the results of one of the most important studies to date relating to Carisolv, in which the Gothenburg School of Dentistry compared the use of Carisolv and drilling in the treatment of caries of the root surface, one of the principal indicators for Carisolv. According to the authors of the article, the time required for caries removal increases by over one minute (5.9 minutes on average for Carisolv as opposed to 4.5 minutes for drilling). According to the authors, this extended working time is compensated for by a reduced need for a local anaesthetic. This result support previously published data on the time difference in the use of Carisolv and drilling and these studies also reveal that the use of a local anaesthetic is considerably reduced in the case of Carisolv treatments. In practice, total treatment times are extended by only one to five minutes. In a widely noticed article in The Wall Street Journal of May 15, 2000, a Hamburg dentist claimed that Carisolv takes five to ten times longer than drilling but this statement is refuted by the results of the studies published. 85% of the patients treated in the Gothenburg study stated that given a choice they would want to be treated in future with Carisolv. They experienced no discomfort from their Carisolv treatment and did not consider that it took longer than with drilling. MediTeam judges that Carisolv has the potential to become the primary alternative in the treatment of root surfaces.
