AstraZeneca hands over to Medicon Village
On 10 January, 2012, AstraZeneca will formally hand over its research facility in Lund to Medicon Village AB. The objective is to establish a new centre for research, innovation and entrepreneurship within Life Science. The deal involves premises with a total area available for letting of around 80,000 m2, of which laboratories account for about 30,000 m2.
As part of its focused research strategy, AstraZeneca made the decision in March 2010 to move its research activities from Lund to Mölndal. The existing research facility is now being sold on to Medicon Village AB – a company that is owned by the Mats Paulsson Foundation for research, innovation and societal development. The purchase price is 450 million SEK. Mats Paulsson, one of Peab’s founders, is the man behind the initiative for the foundation, to which he has made an initial donation of a total of 100 million SEK.
Medicon Village will be letting out the premises at market rates. All profits from the property management activities will be used to promote research and innovation, particularly within the fields of medical research and life science research.
A number of agreements are already in place with organisations that will be moving in as members of Medicon Village:
• Lund University will be locating a centre for cancer research at the Village, comprising – among others - CREATE Health and related activities.
• Region Skåne is moving the regional biobank and certain parts of the regional cancer centre, along with other related activities, to the area.
• ESS is moving its head office to the Village. ESS currently has some 90 employees, and more are on the way in.
• Lund Life Science Incubator is moving in to the Village and thus trebling the size of its existing premises in the process. The incubator is expected to experience growth from 18 to 40 companies within three years.
• The fast-growing Swedish medical technology company Bactiguard is setting up a strategy and marketing office at the Village.
