ESPN’S MICHAEL WILBON TO DELIVER MEDILL 2012 GRADUATION ADDRESS

First graduating class of journalism students from Northwestern University in Qatar also to attend

Evanston, Ill., May 7, 2012 -- Medill Dean John Lavine announced today that ESPN journalist and Medill alumnus Michael Wilbon will be this year's speaker during the school’s journalism graduation ceremony.

Wilbon co-hosts ESPN’s “Pardon the Interruption,” is an NBA studio analyst for ABC and ESPN, writes a column for ESPN.com and ESPNChicago.com and appears weekly on ESPN Radio. He left The Washington Post, where he worked for 31 years as a sports reporter and columnist, in December 2010 to assume his expanded role at ESPN.

Wilbon received his bachelor’s degree in journalism from Medill in 1980.

In 2009 Wilbon was honored by the National Association of Black Journalists with the organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award. He also was in the inaugural class of alumni inducted into Medill’s Hall of Achievement in 1997.

"Mike has been a long-time, deeply committed friend and board member of Medill,” the dean said. “He is recognized as one of the country’s most insightful observers of sports. We are thrilled to welcome him ‘home’ to speak to the Medill class of 2012. It is particularly meaningful this year because Mike is also a trustee of the university, and we will be giving degrees to the first graduates from Northwestern University Qatar. Hearing from Michael is an experience the students will never forget.”

The Medill Convocation ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 16, at the University’s Cahn Auditorium in Evanston, Ill.
