Brand new all-suite eco beach retreat opens on Watamu Beach, Kenya

Kenya is largely known as the home of the classic safari – but it also has some of the best beaches you will find anywhere! Testament to this is that Watamu Beach, 140kms north of Mombasa on the Kenyan coast, is ranked amongst “The World’s Top 10 Beaches”and was also ranked 7th of the “Top 25 Beaches in Africa” in the 2013 TripAdvisor Reader’s Choice Awards.

Those “in the know” have been visiting these glorious stretches of powdery white sand for some time, but have traditionally struggled to find top end, quality accommodation with predominantly package-holiday style hotels to choose from.

But that is all set to change as the brand new Medina Palms officially opens its doors this week - on Saturday 6th July!

Medina Palms has real “wow factor” and sets a whole new benchmark for luxury and exclusivity on the coast. The property enjoys an idyllic location – set on 7 acres of prime seafront property with its own private beach area, leading onto the palm-fringed powder white sands and crystal clear waters of Watamu Beach and the surrounding protected Watamu Marine National Park.

All-Suite Accommodation

Medina Palms’ architecture follows the lines of a Moroccan medina with a waterway running through the entire property from the entrance, through the Medina and Palmerie areas down towards the ocean. Accommodation is in a choice of 1 or 2 bedroomed suites, 2-bedroomed Penthouses or 3-bedroomed Ocean Lodges – all of which have separate living areas and kitchens. Penthouses and Ocean Lodges also have private rooftop terraces with plunge pools. Medina Palms also offers Luxury Villa rentals which are ideal for families or groups of friends ranging from 3 to 5 bedrooms per villa including separate living area, kitchen and roof top terrace with plunge pool.

Medina Palms is offering fantastic launch rates starting from just US$225 per 1-bed suite per night off peak, or US$330 in high season (mid July to end October) and $405 in peak season (over the festive period). Although equipped for self-catering Medina Palms does offer a half board option to include meals. Villa rentals start from US$860 for a 3-bed villa off peak.

Guest facilities include an a’ la carte rooftop restaurant, Amandina, that serves a fusion of North African and Asian cuisine with lots of seafood as well as a tapas bar and tree-top star lounge. The Sakina Ocean Spa also enjoys roof top views whilst inspired treatments soothe body and soul in its 4 treatment rooms and aqua room.

Get Active…

There’s no end to the activities on offer through Medina Palms’ Tribe Watersports Centre including scuba diving, snorkelling, sailing and deep sea sport fishing (tag and release) as well as an internationally recognized kite surfing school. Sunset dhow cruises are very popular followed by a seafood lunch barbeque – with dolphin spotting being a highlight between September to March. This beach experience is also very easily combined with a safari at Tsavo East National Park, where the Big Five roam.

Going Green and Giving back…

Medina Palms is also one of the most ecologically sensitive properties you will find anywhere with large rainwater storage tanks, holding over 120,000 litres of water, designed to take advantage of the area's heavy rainfall in May, whilst bio-digesters minimise water consumption and generate recycled water for laundry, pools and landscape irrigation. In addition, solar water heaters and wind generators provide most of the power needed to run the development. Medina Palms also has, and will continue to provide hundreds of jobs for local people, and has partnered with organisations such as Sustain Worldwide as well as Born Free Foundation to support their community based projects such as the LOT turtle protection programme and building solar-powered lion proof bomas in rural communities.
