MEDLINE RECEIVES 2013 ANNUAL AWARD FOR BUSINESS EXCELLENCE
Award show’s Medline’s strong commitment to business, family and community
MUNDELEIN, Ill., March 14, 2013 — Medline Industries, Inc., was recently honored with the 2013 Annual Award for Business Excellence in the family business category. The 23rd Annual Awards for Business Excellence, presented to outstanding suburban Chicago businesses and non-profit organizations, recognize “business achievement, growth and community involvement.” Medline received the honor last night at an awards ceremony.
Based in Mundelein, Ill., Medline is the largest privately held manufacturer and distributor of medical and surgical supplies in the United States. The company’s roots date back to 1910 when A.L. Mills started sewing butcher’s aprons in Chicago and quickly moved on to making apparel for nurses and doctors. Today, the company is managed by the fourth generation of the Mills family and has more than 2,400 employees in Illinois and 9,000 worldwide.
“We are honored to receive the 2013 Annual Award for Business Excellence. Our family may have started Medline, but it’s our employees — the extended Medline family — who keep our company growing and strong,” said Andy Mills, president of Medline. “As a family company, we love that Mills isn’t the only family name that is heard in multiples around here. In our Waukegan and Mundelein facilities alone, we have many families who have three, four and, in many instances, even more family members working here. It’s the biggest compliment when our employees want their family members to work here, too.”
Along with Mills, Medline’s family leadership team is comprised of Andy’s cousin, Charlie, who is chief executive officer, and Andy’s brother-in-law Jim Abrams, Medline’s chief operating officer. Andy’s father, Jon Mills, and Charlie’s father, Jim Mills, are the co-chairmen of the company.
Each year, Medline conducts a number of activities to support Illinois communities. Last summer more than 800 Medline employees and their families participated in the company’s sixth annual “Medline Makes a Difference Day” where they spent the day building benches and flower boxes, painting murals, and assembling food and hygiene kits for Lake County’s homeless and most needy. The company also participates in the “Make a Wish Foundation” that grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions, as well as a host of other activities such as sponsoring local charity runs and breast cancer awareness efforts that have resulted in company contributions of more than $1.2 million dollars to fund mammograms for underserved women.
The Annual Awards for Business Excellence program is promoted by The Daily Herald Business Ledger, the leading provider of business news and information about businesses and the economy in suburban Chicago.
Medline Widely Recognized as a Great Place to Work
In addition to this recent recognition, Medline was named one of the "Top Workplaces" in the Chicago area by the Chicago Tribune and the 2012 Illinois Family Business of the Year in the large company category by the Family Business Center at Loyola University Chicago’s Quinlan School of Business. Medline was also recently named to the “National 101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For™” list, as well as selected as one of the “Best and Brightest Companies to Work for in Chicago.”
