Vikings’ Kluwe and Minnesotans For Equality Take the Infamous“Burn on Burns” Letter to Radio Before Election Day
Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe and the Minnesotans For Equality freedom fighters are at it again.
In the final weeks before Election Day, the dynamic duo is hitting the airwaves with a tongue-in-cheek radio campaign spoofing the NFL star’s infamous letter to Maryland state delegate Emmett Burns, Jr. The first 60-second radio spot, “Just Vote No,” argues against unneeded amendments to Minnesota’s state constitution that would limit our freedom.
Written and produced by Bill Hillsman of Minneapolis-based North Woods Advertising, the campaign uses Kluwe’s original and unforgettably colorful rhetoric (“Gay marriage won’t affect your marriage in any way. It won’t magically turn you into a lustful c**kmonster.”) to break through the traditional political chalk talk and talking heads that jam the airwaves in the closing weeks of an election. The ad can be heard online at www.MinnesotansForEquality.com
“Chris’ message appeals to many Minnesotans, especially younger voters, Independents and Republicans who are concerned about government infringements on our freedom,” said Hillsman, the President and Chief Creative Officer of North Woods Advertising. “Elected officials in state government seem to believe they have the power to dictate to Americans the limits on our freedom, based solely on their personal opinions. Our Constitution tells us otherwise. And this radio spot encourages citizens to reinforce the Constitution-- loudly and clearly-- by voting ‘No!’ this election day.”
The humorous campaign shows Kluwe as a normal American citizen and father of two speaking out to defend our civil liberties, including marriage equality and the right for gays to marry. And it pokes fun at the hapless right wing government officials who will use any argument to dupe Minnesotans into amending the constitution for discriminatory purposes.
“I like the new ad because if sends a funny yet pointed message about the dangers of letting government dictate our personal life,” said Chris Kluwe.
Ads begin airing Thursday on major Twin Cities stations such as KQRS, 93X and KFAN, as well as Rochester and St. Cloud. Supporters can help Minnesotans for Equality take the campaign statewide by donating at www.MinnesotansForEquality.com or www.VoteNo.mn.
