Executive Leadership Council Black Women’s Leadership Symposium To Be Held in Chicago
Ertharin Cousin, Ambassador, United States Mission to the U.N. Agencies in Rome to Deliver Keynote Address
New York, NY (July 18, 2011)—125 leading Black women managers will participate in the invitation-only 2011 Executive Leadership Council® (The Council) Black Women’s Leadership Symposium on Tuesday, July 19 in Chicago, Illinois, at The Metropolitan Club in the Willis Tower at 233 South Wacker Drive, Chicago, IL. Ertharin Cousin, Ambassador, United States Mission to the U.N. Agencies in Rome will deliver the luncheon keynote address. Immediately following the symposium, an additional 125 women will join the group for the Black Women On…Public Policy, a free event, open to the press, targeting high potential junior to mid-level Black women executives.
The theme for 2011 is Public Policy and will explore Black Women ’s influence and involvement in the political process and legislation. Topics range from the creation of legislation to the presence of Black women in the political arena to the impact of media the political process.
The full day agenda is highlighted by “You Are What You Read (And Watch And Listen To)” – a fireside chat between Dr. Julianne Malveaux, president of Bennett College for Women and Yanick Rice Lamb, associate professor of journalism at Howard University & associate publisher and editorial director, Heart & Soul Magazine.
The way in which people engage politically has completely changed. These two-featured guests will explore the role that traditional and emerging media play in shaping the public’s opinion of lawmakers and legislation.
Other symposium activities include a primer on public policy titled, “How is Public Policy Made?” facilitated by Sheila Talton, Cisco Corporation. Policy Matters: Why Legislative Action Is Important To You. This panel will explore the importance of your own personal engagement and awareness of public policy on your career as well as understanding your company’s business opportunities and challenges. Moderated by Hilda Pinnix-Ragland, Progress Energy and panelists will be Rosalind Hudnell, Intel; Arlene Isaacs-Lowe, Moodys; and Geri Thomas, Bank of America. Also, “Have You Seen Her?” a discussion on Black women in politics today, will be facilitated by Alaina Beverly, The Raben Group.
The free panel, “Black Women On…Public Policy” will begin at 6:15 p.m. and will be moderated by Tina Walls, Altria (retired). Panelists featured are Avis Lavelle, A. Lavelle Consulting; BJ Walker, Senior Fellow, Annie E. Casey Foundation & Senior Consultant, FranklinCovey; Cheryle Jackson, AAR Corporation; and Stephanie Neely, City of Chicago. Bi-annually since 2006, the women of The Council (www.elcinfo.com) have produced the Women Manager’s Symposium, which serves as a unique professional development opportunity for its audience. The event is being held in Chicago for the first time and will feature ELC women members and other highly regarded Black women leaders as panelists followed by smaller, “off-the-record” discussions between mentors and protégés. The Black Women On…series is an annual series that broadens the discussion and participation that is later made available via web cast.
Notable women leaders of The Council participating in this year’s event are its four Co-chairs this year: Julia Brown, Kraft; Leilani Brown, chief marketing officer, Starr Corporation; Susan Champan, American Express; Nicole Lewis, Kelly Services. Jessica Isaacs of Marsh In. and Council board chair and Laysha Ward, of Target Corporation and Council board chair will also attend.
